History of Mableton, GA

The development of Mableton dates to the mid-1840s, when Robert Maple purchased land in the area. A train station brought increased activity to the community in 1881, allowing for additional growth. Although the community incorporated as a city in 1912, it dis-incorporated after only four years and remains unincorporated. Mableton is located just 14 miles west of Atlanta and considered just on the outskirts of the city limits.

At the time of the 2010 Census, Mableton recorded a population in excess of 37,000 residents. More than 27 percent of residents are children, and approximately 8 percent of residents are seniors over 65 years of age. Community stability is reflected in the fact that 84 percent of residents remain in the same home for at least one year. The community’s adult population has an 83-percent rate of high school graduation. Approximately 36 percent of adults also hold four-year college degrees or higher. The average travel time for those commuting to work is approximately 30 minutes, and Mableton features more than 3,800 businesses.

Mableton’s students are served by the Cobb County School District, which is committed to creating and supporting pathways for students to achieve success. The vision of the district, empowering dreams for the future, focuses on equipping students with the skills they need to thrive as they transition to adulthood. Many of the district’s schools have been recognized as National Blue Ribbon Schools or as Georgia Schools of Excellence.

Because of Mableton’s location, area students have local post-secondary options in Atlanta and Kennesaw. The prestige of Georgia Tech and Georgia State University is appealing for those who are interested in four-year degrees or graduate studies. There are also at least eight additional colleges and universities located within 150 miles of Mableton.
