Once considered the center of the Cherokee Nation, Canton, Georgia is located at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains, an area that was initially largely overlooked by settlers until the 1829 gold rush. Most of the Cherokee population remained in Canton until 1838, at which time, federal troops came to the area to remove them. Canton was previously known as Etowah, but the name was formally changed in 1834. The city serves as the Cherokee County seat.
