Virtually all air conditioning systems rely on refrigerant to keep you cool, but does the type you use truly matter? Find out why Carrier’s Puron Advance meets and exceeds every expectation for a top-quality HVAC refrigerant.
The Puron Advance Difference
Whatever type of refrigerant an HVAC system uses, it’s unavoidable for trace amounts of other substances to get released into the air during the evaporation process. Worldwide, steps have been taken over the past few decades to help ensure these materials don’t harm human health, deplete the ozone layer or contribute to global warming. Whether it’s the refrigerant known as R22 or the more recent R-410A, refrigerants are gradually phased out in favor of safer products. This is where Carrier’s new refrigerant, Puron Advance, comes into play.
Starting January 1, 2025, the EPA will prohibit manufacturers, like Carrier, from producing residential ducted and ductless HVAC systems that use the current R-410A (Puron) refrigerant. Puron Advance complies with—and surpasses—these new regulations, offering a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 466, which is 75% lower than that of R-410A. It’s designed to replace Puron in all of Carrier’s residential ducted and ductless heating and cooling products. Puron Advance surpasses the new governmental requirements without impacting its cooling performance.

How HVAC Refrigerants Function
No matter the brand, HVAC refrigerants work by extracting heat from the air and moving it elsewhere. How do they accomplish this remarkable feat? As the liquid refrigerant cycles through the evaporator, it changes into a gas, pulling heat from the surrounding air. The gaseous refrigerant then gets directed to the system’s compressor and condenser, which turn the vapor back into a liquid.
