From weird noises to crazy temperature changes, and more, HVAC systems can act up, leading to questions that may require professional support. Check out some of the most common and timely questions we get asked at E. Smith below, and obtain expert tips on each topic.

Q: What is the R-410A Refrigerant Phaseout?

A: R-410A, also known as Puron, is a refrigerant that, as of January 1, 2025, is no longer allowed to be included in the manufacturing of residential ducted and ductless HVAC equipment. The discontinuation of this product is part of the efforts of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reduce the use of refrigerants with high Global Warming Potential (GWP).

Expert Tip: Ensure Your HVAC System is Compliant
Having an HVAC system that uses the right refrigerant and is serviced throughout the year will not only help you stay compliant with your home’s HVAC equipment but will also help you save on intricate repairs or even replacements.

At E. Smith, we have already implemented the sale and installation of HVAC equipment with updated and compliant refrigerants. Our manufacturer partner, Carrier®, started implementing Puron Advance in their production efforts. This refrigerant exceeds the EPA’s new requirements and has a 75% reduction in GWP compared to R-410A. For additional information, please contact our experts here.

Q: How often should I have my HVAC system serviced?

A: Regular maintenance is key to the efficiency and longevity of your HVAC system. Most experts recommend servicing your HVAC system twice a year. Specifically, once in the spring for cooling and once in the fall for heating.

Expert Tip: Save with a Maintenance Plan
The E. Smith Energy Savings Agreement, also known as our Maintenance Plan, is designed to help you lower energy costs by scheduling regular preventive maintenance checkups to ensure your air conditioning and heating systems operate at maximum efficiency. Our Energy Savings Agreement is a tool to help you save up to $50 on your utility bill each month. Learn more here.

Q: Should I repair or replace my HVAC unit?

A: Even with all the care, there will be a time when your HVAC system will require replacement. If your system is over 10-15 years old, needs frequent repairs, or isn’t energy efficient, replacement might be a better option.

Expert Tip: Have Your HVAC System Assessed
Before replacing your HVAC unit, consider a professional assessment to determine the best course of action. At E. Smith, our NATE-Certified experts are ready to support you with this process! Learn more here.
