In a continued effort to phase out the production and consumption of hydrofluorocarbons (HCFCs), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will no longer allow manufacturers to build residential ducted and ductless HVAC equipment using the current R-410A refrigerant, starting January 1, 2025.
HCFCs are potent greenhouse gases (GHGs) without known natural resources; they are used in various applications and may contribute to global warming. R-410A, also known as Puron, is next on the phaseout list, with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) rating over 700, a number that will no longer be allowed.
According to the EPA, new systems with a GWP above 700 can be installed until January 1, 2026, so long as all components are manufactured or imported before January 1, 2025. While this may sound like good news, it is best to stay ahead and opt for a GWP-compliant system.
No Need to Panic. E. Smith is Here to Help!
Manufacturers like our partner Carrier® will begin to implement the use of Puron Advance in their production efforts. This refrigerant exceeds the EPA’s new requirement with a GWP of 466 and has a 75% reduction in GWP compared to R-410A.
