History

Milton, Georgia was incorporated in 2006 from lands that were mostly rural. The community was named after Revolutionary War hero John Milton, who was from the area. Milton and the rest of Fulton County have a long natural, economic and cultural history. At the center of the history is the Chattahoochee River, which brought some of the first settlers to the area. Nearby Roswell still has many of its pre-Civil War Era buildings that have been beautifully restored and maintained. Today, Milton is known as a suburban bedroom community of Atlanta, which is located just a few miles further south. Many of Milton’s residents work in Atlanta and commute home each evening.

Education

Residents of Milton can participate in some specialty educational courses, including sports training in lacrosse and the arts. These take place through the city’s parks and recreation department. A few local dance studios teach ballet, pointe, tap, ballroom, belly dance and jazz to toddlers through adult age groups.

Demographics

According to the U.S. Census, Milton had a population of about 33,000 in 2010. About 76.6 percent of the community’s residents are Caucasian, 10.4 percent are Asian, 9.0 percent are African American and 6 percent are Hispanic, of any race. Milton is an affluent community, with average annual household income of nearly $100,000. Fulton County Schools operates the public school system, which includes eight elementary schools, four middle schools and four high schools.

Cultural Interest

People with an interest in the arts can take the short drive over to Roswell. The Roswell Center for the Arts offers exhibitions of local sculpture, paintings and other types of art. The Milton City Library offers guest lectures, engagements and speakers of all types. Residents can also take the short drive to Atlanta, which is the cultural center of the South. The High Museum of Art, Zoo Atlanta, Atlanta Botanical Gardens and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial are all within a short drive of Milton.

Things to Do

The city is partnered with nearby Alpharetta and offers programming such as yoga in Friendship Park, youth baseball and softball and summertime arts caps. The community also hosts annual events including the Mayor’s Run Fundraiser for youth programming, the Milton Hometown Jubilee and the Milton Fire Department Pancake Breakfast with Santa. The Chattahoochee River offers Milton residents the opportunity to explore nature, go fishing or hiking at the Chattahoochee Bend State Park. The National Park Service also operates the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area where visitors can go boating, fishing or hiking on the marked trails.
